Off the coast of Grand Cayman the legend of the Ten Sail remains a testament to both the perils of the sea and the courage of those who dwell upon the shore. In 1794 a British convoy miscalculated their course in the dark of night and struck the jagged reef off the East End of the island. While many vessels foundered in the treacherous surf the story did not end in tragedy because local residents rushed to the water and braved the pounding seas to rescue the stranded crews and bring them to safety. The locals knew the waters and understood the risks.
